The gaff rig gives the sail its traditional quadrilateral shape. Gaff: The gaff is controlled with a set of lines known as peak and throat halyards. These lines raise and control the angle of the gaff. Boom: The lower edge of the mainsail is attached to a horizontal boom, which helps to shape the sail and provides a point of control for the mainsheet.
